A unique case of miliary pulmonary tuberculosis induced by bacillus Calmette-Guérin intravesical instillation with COVID-19 superinfection

چکیده

Intravesical instillation of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is used as an adjuvant treatment bladder cancer. Systemic BCG infection occurs in less than 1% cases, and pulmonary involvement even rarer (0.3% – 0.7%), with a favourable prognosis. A 78-year-old male developed miliary tuberculosis (TB) secondary to intravesical subsequent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) superinfection that led patient death. High awareness amongst clinicians needed proceed immediate appropriate therapy these patients, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic

Miliary Tuberculosis that Developed after Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Therapy

As a treatment for superficial transitional cell carcinoma, Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) intravesical instillation can rarely cause unpredictable systemic side effects. We describe a patient admitted due to continuous pyrexia and general fatigue. He was previously treated with intravesical BCG. Laboratory data indicated a hepatic disorder, and chest computed tomography revealed extensive bila...

Is Bladder Tumor Location Associated with Prostate Cancer Detection after Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Instillation?

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of bladder tumor (BT) location on prostate cancer (PCa) detection in patients with elevated PSA levels after intravesical BCG instillation. METHODS Between February 2004 and January 2013 prostate biopsies were performed in 59 non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) patients whose PSA level were elevated (≥3 ng/ml) after a 6 week c...

Granulomatous balanitis after intravesical Bacille Calmette-Guérin instillation.

Transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder is an aggressive tumor with a high potential for malignant progression. Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has been used to treat malignant diseases for more than 20 years, and bladder cancer has been treated with it longer, since 1976. BCG is an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis; instilled in solution to treat bladder cancer, it delays recurrence an...

[Tuberculosis miliar in a patient treated with intravesical instillations of bacillus Calmette-Guérin].

Tuberculosis miliar is a very rare complication of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy that is associated to high mortality. Thus, early diagnosis and treatment is essential. At present, there is a polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR) which is a rapid diagnostic method with elevated sensitivity. Treatment with tuberculostatic agents should be initiated as soon as possible, the com...
